Recovery scams after a loss: fake investigators and refund promises

Posting about a loss can attract people who say they can get the money back. A second approach deserves its own scrutiny, even when the person sounds sympathetic or already knows details of the original incident.

“They say they can recover everything”

An unsolicited guarantee and a request for an upfront recovery fee are warning signs highlighted by the FTC. A screenshot of a balance or a claimed success story is not proof that someone can recover your assets. Contact known providers through their official channels.

Keep the two incidents separate

Explain the original loss briefly, then describe how the recovery account found you, what it promised and what it requested. State whether you actually paid. If you submit another report, avoid copying unrelated personal details from the first one.

ScamBoard does not charge recovery fees

ScamBoard is a community reporting and search platform. It does not recover funds, ask for your seed phrase or appoint people to approach contributors privately with guaranteed refunds. Confirm communications through the contact information on the official site.

Can an anonymous report replace a police or payment-provider report?

No. Publishing a ScamBoard experience does not file an official complaint or start a chargeback. Use the relevant provider, platform or local authority’s reporting process as appropriate.
